Hosei University Mount Everest Expedition English Report Nr.2

Hosei University Everest 2000 Progress Report Nr.2 The Hosei team completed the first stage

of the expedition to Mt. Everest by successfully adjusting for altitude up to 5000 meters

at the Langtang trek. (26th of March to 7th of April) The next four days in Kathmandu were used to

make final equipment and food purchases as well as complete the preparations for the climb up

the North Ridge of Mt. Everest. The Hosei team left Katmandu on the 12th of April. The route

to the Everest Basechamp took four days. We traveled from Kathmandu to Kodari (Nepalese Border city)

and stayed over night. The next day we crossed the border into the Tibetan City of Zanmu early

in the morning. From Zanmu we traveled to Niramu (Tibetan city) where the team stayed over night

at an altitude of 3600m. The next day we traveled by landcruiser to the Tibetan city

of Tenguri (4200m) and stayed over night. On the morning of the 15th the Hosei team

left for the Mt. Everest base camp (5200m) and arrived according to schedule at around 13:00 PM.

The next two days where used to adjust for altitude and organize the Hosei Basecamp.

The expeditionfs training schedule will start on 18th of April when the climbing members

will climb to Camp One or Two and the Sherpas will leave with the Yak caravan to carry supplies

as far as the Advanced Basecamp (ABC or C3 at an altitude of 6300m). All the team members

are generally fine with the occasional occurrence of strong headaches. Remarkably,

especially Hosei members exceeding 60 years of age are in surprisingly good condition.

Finally, I again wish to thank our sponsors, The North Face whose clothes keep us warm,

swatch whose internet time and Kenwood whose wireless assist us in communication

and Pocari Sweat who keeps us hydrated at high altitude. Thanks also to my wife Louise

and mum and dad for waiting patiently.
